It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice

I find it interesting to know what people develop on and what software they use. At the moment, my development is done mostly on an iMac 24" core 2 duo 2.13GHz, 2GB RAM. I use either Adobe Photoshop or the GIMP for graphics work and prefer dreamweaver for html coding.
On a personal level, I love photography, listening to music (almost every kind), films, miniature painting and computers (who says work can't be a hobby too?).
Well as you have probably guessed from the eponymous title of this site, my name is Graham Gilchrist, and this site showcases my work and experience. I was trained as a scientist and have a passion for all things technical, yet I also love creating and designing, so naturally I find a home in computer-based design and production, specifically web design and coding.
What I love doing:
I am currently employed as a web developer for the LLAS subject centre where I am responsible for maintaining the CMS applications running two high profile web sites, and many smaller ones. I also do graphic design and database maintainance and custom programming using PHP and VB.Net.
Prior to this I completed studies for a PhD at Southampton University in liquid crystal optics. During my time as a PhD student I also worked as a freelance web designer and consultant on projects for the School of Physics and Astronomy.
I also completed my undergraduate studies at southampton, graduating with a Masters degree in Physics. During this time I also worked as a PR/graphic design assistant in the Optoelectronics Research Centre full time during the holidays and part-time during term-time.
If you are interested in casting the way-back machine even further, you can see my earlier academic record in my CV or you can find out more about me on my personal about page.
