I am a professional web designer and developer, focussing on clean, standards-based HTML and CSS. I've been working in the web field since 1997, both freelance and employed, on a range of projects from design work and theme implementation all the way up to bespoke and open source content management.

'Why Study Languages' is a site which forms part of the Routes into languages initiative. It's aim is to provide fun materials to enhance language learning which teachers can use in the classroom.

A microsite for a large academic conference run by the subject centre for languages, linguistics and area studies. I was responsbile for the conversion of the design to a standards based XHTML and CSS drupal theme. I also developed custom CSS for the payment processing system to make the steps of the process clearer and more intuitive. In the drupal configuration, the site had integration with the southampton university payments system and utilised a custom module for attendee registration....

The Learning Object Creator (LOC) tool is a piece of e-learning software to enable educators to create re-usable online content (Learning Objects) to a specific educational template.

Starting off as a VB.NET desktop application, the LOC tool moved to a browser-based online version to make it cross platform and easier to teach during workshops. Links into languages was a UK government funded project to provide CPD courses to UK school languages teachers.

This was a big project, with a wide ranging remit and feature requirements. Regional teams required identical subsections on the site, separately access controlled. The site also needed to provide user accounts for customers to sign up to mailing lists and register for events, and a CRM to manage and deal with customers efficiently.

Discover America was a project funded by the American Embassy to encourage the takeup of american studies university courses

The project was to be distributed both online via the website and via an offline CD. This meant the site had to be composed of static HTML files, all with relative links that could work loaded from the local file system. I translated the designs into HTML/CSS.
